It has now become a sound that is truly iconic of the streaming platform. The famous “Tou Dum” Netflix is an integral part of the brand that currently exists on the market of the video. While the company currently seeks his Holy Grail of the franchise, a content that can compete with Harry Potter or Star Wars, this is also a time to rewind, back to the origins. And in this registry, the iconic has a history surprising.
Decision time for Netflix
In the podcast , “Twenty Thousand Hertz, the vice-president, product Netflix Todd Yellin, and the sound editor Lon Bender (which won an Oscar) are back on the subject of the design of the iconic Netflix. The opportunity to learn that he could very well have is the noise of a goat that bleats.
Originally, the ambition was to re-create the famous roar of the lion of MGM, but by producing the bleat of a goat.
I liked the sound of the goat. It was funny and rather bizarre. It was our version of the lion.
The goal of Netflix was to make feel the users of the platform that they were going to be spoiled. In total, between 20 and 30 sounds have been studied by Netflix before choosing the right one. Among the other sounds that have been studied, figured among the noise of an ocean agitated. But, it is the “Tou Dum” – derived from the sound made by the double impact of fist of Frank Underwood knocking his office in House of Cards, the emblematic series of Netflix – which was finally chosen. With hindsight, it is said that Netflix has no doubt made the right choice, even if it would not have necessarily impacted on the success of the streaming platform.
Now only remains to know how to hear the famous “Tou Dum” or the sound of a goat when it goes in the full speed or in slow motion, a feature now endorsed by Netflix.
