Las Delegates of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organization of American States (OAS)met this Wednesday in Panama to strengthen policies and legislation in favor of the empowerment of women.
The meeting takes place within the framework of the 39th Assembly of the CIM in the Latin American Parliament and Caribeño (Parlatino), based in Panama City, which will be held today and tomorrow.
“This Assembly of the Inter-American Commission of Women (…) it is going to adopt a declaration and an action plan for the next three years”, he told Efethe president of the Executive Committee of the CIM and minister for women of the Dominican Republic, Mayra Jiménez.
The representatives of the CIM, made up of 34 delegates, will discuss alliances that favor policies and laws on economic empowerment and women’s leadership, as well as review the Draft Strategic Plan for the period 2022-2026 to approve it.
They will also discuss economic recovery post-pandemic with a gender approach, the role of women in care and the environment, issues that will be covered to approve said plan, as explained to Efe by the Panamanian Minister of Social Development, Maria Inés Castillo.
Jiménez pointed out that Latin America and The Caribbean still has a wide range of challenges to improve the situation of women in the region, but he applauded the countries that have advanced in more egalitarian legislation.
“The region has challenges regarding the political participation of women, which we aspire to advance towards equality and parity as Chile, Mexico and Costa Rica have done”, explained the Dominican minister.
And he clarified that “half of the population cannot be outside the spaces where public policies are discussed and approved.”
Thus, Latin America It must advance in legislation against sexist violence, since “4,091 women have fallen victims of femicide in the last year”, he pointed out.
“Establishing comprehensive policies for the prevention, care, repair and punishment of violence implies a great commitment of our states with women,” she pointed out.
“There are so many issues that we have in the region that women are going to be there from this commission”, she added.
At this meeting, which is being held face-to-face in Panama after two years of being convened virtually by the covid-19 pandemic, 20 ministers from the Americas have come to “work for the human rights of women,” explained Castillo.
“This assembly aims to bridges for a new social and economic pact led by women. The creation of alliances is the indispensable condition to advance towards sustainable development and the inclusion of women is essential to travel a different path”, declared the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, at the opening ceremony. .
