Sam Bird in a Jaguar won the second race in New York for the 2021 Formula E World Championship. On the podium Nick Cassidy (Virgin) and the 2020 champion, Antonio Felix da Costa (DS-Techeetah). Off the podium and even from the points Mitch Evans, second up to 2 minutes from the end and then 13th for a problem in the rear left and for the exhaustion of energy. Also the Italian-Swiss Edoardo Mortara, now no longer leader of the World Championship, was off the points.

Immediately a problem at the start for Jean-Eric Vergne’s DS, with the Safety Car Mini SE on the track after a minute of racing to “slow” Bird’s escape attempt, while René Rast’s Audi went out and was imposed a drive through to Blomqvist for excess energy used. A rear-end collision after an overtaking attempt almost immediately compromised the Mortara E-Prix, but for the former championship leader in the end it was a not irremediable misstep as the various Frijns, Vergne and Rast collected very little and the head of the ranking – now occupied by Bird himself – is not very far away.
