D.he Israeli army claims to have attacked a base of the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This was a reaction to fire balloons that had previously been sent from the coastal area towards Israel, the army announced on Friday night. Hamas developed weapons on the base.
Militant Palestinians repeatedly let such balloons loaded with explosives and incendiary devices fly over the border to Israel in order to cause damage there. There are regular fires in fields in the south of the country.
Israel’s armed forces had an eleven-day exchange of blows with Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip in May. According to official information, 13 people were killed in Israel and 255 people died in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health. Egypt eventually brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza ruling Hamas, which went into effect on May 21.
The Islamist Hamas is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the EU. Most of the two million people in the coastal area live in very poor conditions, according to aid organizations.

The day before, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is currently on a state visit to the country, called for a solution. Steinmeier said there had to be a political solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. He added that he had not heard of “an alternative to the two-state solution” so far. At the same time, he admitted that “at the moment” the main concern was “building a minimum of trust between the new Israeli leadership and the Palestinian side”. The way to a resumption of the direct dialogue “about the big questions”
can only work through the “small steps of concrete cooperation”.

The past few months have shown “that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has by no means disappeared,” Steinmeier recalled, referring to the escalation of violence between radical Palestinian organizations and Israel in May. “Of course, Israel has every right to defend its security and existence,” emphasized the Federal President, who also condemned Iran’s “destabilizing role” in the region.
