A round of Russian missiles hit Ukraine’s capital early Sunday, striking unspecified “infrastructure” targets, according to the mayor of kyiv. No deaths were reported, although one person was hospitalized for injuries.
But the attack shattered the sense of calm in kyiv, which had not suffered similar attacks since the visit of the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on April 28.
Missile strikes hit the Darnytski and Dniprovski districts of the city and services of emergencies arrived at the scene, the mayor of kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Air-raid sirens sounded around the time of the explosions.
The smell of acrid smoke filled the air in the Darnystki district of eastern kyiv, where a plume of smoke billowed into the sky.Soldiers and policemen blocked a main road leading to the site of the attack. Smoke rose from the blackened remains of a warehouse-like structure.

In the east of the country, Russian forces continued their advance with missiles and air strikes on cities and towns in the Luhansk region.
“Air strikes from Ka-52 helicopters were made in the Girske and Myrna Dolyna areas, from Su-25 planes in Ustynivka,” Luhansk Governor Serhyi Haidai said on Telegram. The city of Lysychansk was hit by a Tochka-U missile.
A total of 13 houses were damaged in Girske and five in Lysychansk. Another airstrike was reported in the city of Kramatorsk, according to its mayor Oleksandr Goncharenko. No one was killed in the attack, he noted, although two of the city’s businesses suffered “significant damage.”
The Ukrainian General Staff on Sunday morning accused Russian forces of using phosphorus munitions in the Kharkiv area and said Moscow continued to carry out air and missile strikes against civilian and military infrastructure, including in kyiv. /p>

In its morning part, the Ukrainian army said that Russian forces had used phosphorous ammunition in the area of the town of Cherkaski Tyshky in the Kharkiv region. The claim could not be independently verified.
The war report also confirmed attacks in kyiv in the early hours of Sunday. At first it was not clear from the statement which infrastructures in kyiv were hit.
The General Staff also said that Russian forces continue attack operations in Sievierodonetsk, in the eastern region of Luhansk, one of two key cities left to capture there. The Russians now control the eastern part of the city, according to the report, and are focused on surrounding Ukrainian forces in the area and “blocking the main logistics routes.”
In the Black Sea, the General Staff indicated, five Kalibr cruise missiles were waiting ready to be used.

In its daily intelligence briefing, the British military said Ukrainian counterattacks in Sieverodonetsk “likely curb the operational inertia that Russian forces had gained by concentrating firepower and operational units.”
The statement also indicated that the Russian military relies in part on reserve troops in the Luhansk region.
“These troops are poorly equipped and trained and lack heavy equipment, compared to regular Russian units,” the report noted, adding that “this strategy probably indicates a desire to limit the losses suffered by Russian regular forces.” .
Far from the battlefield, the players of the Ukrainian national team were aiming for a place in the World Cup in a match against Wales in Cardiff on Sunday.
