The elimination of both Ferraris in qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix confirms the difficulties of the Red in 2021, far from the top positions and in a close battle with McLaren for third place in the constructors’ championship. The goal for the Scuderia di Maranello is to return to compete for victory in 2022, the year in which the new aerodynamic regulations will debut and the new Pirelli tires with 18-inch rims will be introduced.
The protagonists at Ferrari have stated on several occasions how attention to Maranello has long been focused on the project for next season. During the Thursday press conference held at the Red Bull Ring, Charles Leclerc has revealed in particular that he has already tested the car for 2022 in the simulator, unlike other drivers from rival teams who said on the same day that they had not yet had this opportunity.
2022: Leclerc and the Ferrari advance
At the end of Spielberg’s qualifications, Carlos Sainz was contacted by FormulaPassion if he too, like his teammate, has tried the new car. The Spaniard confirmed, also providing a detail on the timing: “Yes, I have tried it. I’ve been around with that since January“. Previously, Leclerc had emphasized at the press conference how such involvement of the drivers in the development of the new car is of particular importance: “It’s difficult because for now it’s just numbers and forecasts, but undoubtedly we can provide our impressions, especially to the simulator. We are lucky to have a great simulator in Ferrari that allows us to try different solutions and the driver’s input is very, very important. […] I would say that in the simulator we can give a great input and be of great help, also with our impressions of this year to try to help the team work in the right direction and to know what it takes to be fast“.

However, before 2022 it will be necessary to conclude the current season, starting with the second race at the Red Bull Ring. Sainz commented on the preparation work done at Ferrari this week and the dynamics of qualifying: “In general we went faster than last weekend, but for some reason there is someone who has done a better job than us with the medium tire, besides the fact that many riders have passed the cut with the soft, which will be a disadvantage for tomorrowotherwise I think we would have been closer today than last weekend. However, it is a pity not to have entered Q3 with an average of six thousandths ”. Sainz in particular believes that being able to freely choose the tires with which to start the race is very useful: “If it will be an advantage? I think so, that’s what we think “.
