This Sunday the Tour de France 2020 closed and the triumph of Tadej Pogacar was completed , who had already virtually secured the title at the end of the previous stage, but who needed to cross the finish line to confirm the crown. Who also celebrated was Sam Bennett , winner of the last phase, arriving ahead of the world champion, the Danish Mads Pesersen , and the Slovak Peter Sagan .
“I’m dreaming, I don’t know what to say,” Pogacar had declared on French television on Saturday when he had to wear yellow. “My dream at the beginning was simply to participate in a Tour and today I win it in the last stage,” added the young Slovenian, who raced for the first time in the Grande Boucle.
Few gave Pogacar as the winner of the Tour, as he started the time 57 seconds behind his compatriot Primoz Roglic , who had been very solid so far in the race. But the cyclist who will celebrate his 22nd birthday on Monday had prepared very well: “He had recognized the route, he knew every curve and every point at which to accelerate,” he explained.
It was soon seen that Pogacar was flying and that Roglic might not have his day. The champion’s demonstration in such a demanding time , completing the 36.2 km of route in 55:55, at an average of 39.5 km / h, also served to sign up the stage, after beating the Dutchman in 1:21 Tom Dumoulin and Australian Richie Porte. That is how he was able to establish himself and arrived on Sunday as a virtual champion. In addition to yellow, he won the youth and mountain classification.

Stage 21, with a route of 122 km between Mantes La Jolie to the Champs-Élysées in Paris, was for the Irishman Bennett, who completed the route in 2h 53 ′ 32 ″ and arrived ahead of the Danish Mads Pedersen and the Slovak Peter Sagan . For its part, Pogacar finished with a mark of 87h 20 ′ 05 ″.
With the consecration of the young runner, Slovenia has become the 15th country to inscribe his name in the list of winners of the Tour de France , whose first edition was held in 1903. Last year it was Colombia, which entered the list after the historic triumph of Egan Bernal.
In turn, the cyclist was the youngest competitor to win the race since World War II. The record in this case remains for Frenchman Henri Cornet, who won the Tour at the age of 19, in 1904.
