Smart cities and how new technologies will help municipalities was the focus of the meeting organized by the company Of course telecommunications.
Representatives from the private, public and academic worlds gathered at the meeting “Digital Municipality, the smart city begins in your commune”, an instance that seeks to present the latest technological initiatives applicable to smart cities and demonstrate their benefits for communities.
In total, there were 14 companies that were able to publicize their products and services related to the matter.

The activity was led by Francisco Guzmán, director of Claro Empresas, who argued that the event seeks to demonstrate “how cities, incorporating technologies and communications, can become smart cities. We are seeing how these solutions can positively impact the quality of life of citizens”.
Mobility, security, sustainability and the ability to change according to people’s needs stand out, according to Guzmán, as aspects of cities where these technologies could be used.
The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of Transportation, Cristóbal Pineda,who stated that the challenge of smart cities is “to provide cities with different sensors and data collection to support decision-making”.
The latter, explained the authority, referring to “road infrastructure planning based on existing data” and the demand for information from users in real time, on traffic accidents and more .

The exhibitors agree that the gaps in this matter, between the Metropolitan region and the rest of the country, “are extremely large,” says Pineda, adding that solutions to reduce these differences must be sought with a leading role for local governments, “to have this type of technology and advances in the different regions and communes of our country.”
Among the brands present, Qualcomm stood out, linked to 5G and the development of smartphones. Santiago Fontán Balestra, director of sales and business development for Latin America South, stressed that “the main advantages of 5G are higher speed, lower latency, response time, and much greater capacity. This will make it possible to spread the internet of things, notebooks, connected and autonomous cars, and carry out remote operations. virtual and adapted reality”, emphasized Fontán Balestra.
Another company present was Coprom Chile, a firm that recently inaugurated the department of smart cities and renewable energies. Self-sustaining public lighting systems with solar panels, wind energy and smart devices with Wi-Fi connection, among others, were presented at the event.
Alejandro Dominioni, a member of the new business development department, highlighted that it is possible to “add functionalities such as video analytics to these technologies, to prevent traffic problems.”
Francisco Guzmán concluded that the great challenge “is to convert all the data that we have available in cameras, communication companies, into information that allows us to make better decisions and be able to positively impact people’s lives” .
The meeting took place at the Claro Laboratory-UC 5G Innovation Center, located on the San Joaquín Campus of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
