Floods have turned parts of Germany into disaster areas. Climate crisis is the word of the hour. However, the new EU climate package has met with criticism.
Berlin – With a view to the current situation in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, numerous politicians are calling for more commitment to climate protection. The EU Commission recently presented a comprehensive package of measures with which the member states’ climate targets are to be achieved. But this does not only meet with approval.
As a board member of the SPD, Matthias Miersch warns against overlooking social problems. Mobility and a warm home should not become luxury goods. “That is why it is so important to look at the social effects of climate protection at an early stage – otherwise there is a risk of a major uprising in Europe,” explains Miersch to the German Press Agency in Berlin.

EU climate protection package: facing industrial revolution
According to the EU Commission’s plan, a separate emissions trading system is to be introduced in road traffic and the real estate sector. In Germany, the CO2 price currently applies in these areas, which affects fuel and heating. Here the SPD had recently criticized a too rapid increase in prices.
SPD man Miersch also explains that we are “facing an industrial revolution that has many opportunities for all citizens of Europe”. You have to join a discussion process in which nobody is left out or overwhelmed. It is also the duty of the Social Democrats to work to ensure that the additional costs of climate protection are distributed fairly – and not passed on to consumers.
In the expansion of renewable energies, the electorate criticizes the Christian Democrats directly. According to Miersch, one could be further here if the Union – in his opinion – had not stood in the way of this project. Quick action now has to be taken in order to advance the maximum expansion. Party colleague and member of the Bundestag Klaus Mindrup goes one step further and describes Economics Minister Altmaier on Twitter as “THE expansion brake for photovoltaics and wind.”
