Artists such as Josep Maria Morató Aragonés, Pere Calderó or Modest Gené, in previous editions, and Regina Giménez, Salvador Juanpere, Aureli Ruiz or Joaquim Chancho, in more recent calls, have found in the Art Biennial of the Modern Art Museum of the Diputació de Tarragona (MAMT), the impulse to consolidate their careers. Now, the 2021 edition is adapting to the new demands and creative trends in order to “open, even more, the awards to the artistic world of the demarcation, the country and the State,” said the president of the Diputació de Tarragona, Noemí Llauradó, while the director of the MAMT, Manel Margalef, stressed that currently “the artistic discipline is not a closed field, but rather obeys a diverse, interdisciplinary field of creation within digital environments.”
And with this objective, the Biennal d’Art organized by the Tarragona Provincial Council is experiencing a new impulse this year with the reformulation of the bases of the call. Thus, the two awards that were awarded until now (the Tapiro for painting and the Julio Antonio for sculpture, created in 1944) are merged into a single award, recognized at 6,000 euros.

“Artists are committed to new trends that merge different artistic languages”Noemí LlauradóPresident of the Provincial Council
In this regard, Noemí Llauradó explained that the change aims to “give way to the great creative flow and artists who are betting on new disciplines and who fuse different artistic languages, with a prominent presence of digital technology.” For this reason, he continued explaining, “the awards will admit works of any style that are framed within the current concept of visual arts, regardless of their discipline and without attending to any previous classification”, with the aim of favoring the interest and complicity of the authors and authors.
The winning work will become part of the art collection of the Museu d’Art Modern de la Diputació
Another of the novelties of this year’s call is the awarding of two second prizes valued at 3,000 euros each and the endowment of 600 euros for the ten works that, although they do not obtain any prize, are chosen to be part of the exhibition of the Biennal d’Art, which will take place at the Museu d’Art Modern de la Diputació de Tarragona in September of this year. In addition, “the winning work will become part of the art collection of the Museum of Modern Art of the Diputació de Tarragona, so it will share space with other relevant works that await in this reference space in the country,” explained Llauradó.

Cultural engineDuring the presentation, the president of the Tarragona Provincial Council stressed that the change in the bases does not alter the objective of the Provincial Council, which “is to promote creativity, attract talent and reinforce the role of the institution and the museum as a showcase, and at the same time motor, of new tendencies ». “We want to contribute to stimulate the production of cultural content, so that one of the engines of recovery occurs in these turbulent times marked by Covid,” he added.
For his part, the deputy delegate for Culture of the Diputació, Joanjo Garcia, pointed out that “the new stage that begins the Biennal d’Art Diputació de Tarragona is also reflected in its new name and graphic image, much fresher and more current.” Finally, the president of the Diputació de Tarragona predicted that “the awards will be successful, both for quantity and quality, since the territory is full of talent that deserves new opportunities to continue on its way.”
