A museum montage on the era of Trujillo and his execution was inaugurated at the National Museum of History and Geography ;a (MNHG) in order to commemorate, last Monday, May 30, 61 years since the death of the dictator.

This is the first complete and formal museographic exhibition of the MNHG after it opened several of its spaces to the public several months ago, after being closed for more than two decades.

And he does it with the most “trite” of Dominican history; a character that, as the director of the Museum says, the historian José; Guerrero, there is always something to tell or show.

“It is a subject that will never run outbecause Trujillo, his government; his political,  economic and cultural actions were definitive in shaping what is today the Dominican Republic”, comments the university professor.

What? What is shown this time? Many things, including some that no one has seen, Guerrero points out, such as objects that Trujillo used for his personal dressing.

After ruling dictatorially for 31 years, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (San Cristóbal, 1891) was assassinated on May 30, 1961 when he was moving from the capital to his hometown. 

Guerrero states that, as part of the collection and the exhibition, “we have the only piece that has survived that night of May 30, which is that car owned by Antonio de la Maza, which was managed by Huáscar Tejeda and Pedro Livio Cedeño. The other cars have disappeared, the weapons have disappeared, the witnesses have already died; the only thing left to show is that car that is there.”

Guerrero informs that the montage will remain open until all the rooms of the museum are enabled, seven in total.

Currently, the public that approaches the building located in the Plaza de la Cultura can appreciate the piano -restored- where the teacher José Reyes composed and played the National Anthem in 1883, the evolution of the Dominican coat of arms and the Black Jack, the ship in which the Dominican arrived. Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamaño and eight companions to Playa Caracoles, in February 1973, with the purpose of restoring the government of the ousted Juan Bosch.

“Museums are not only pieces , texts and images; they are also videos and a lot of technology.  We have that Caamaño yacht on display, so we are going to see Caamaño speaking there. with the guerrillas, above, in a hologram”, advances the teacher.
 

OF INTEREST

– The MNHG is inaugurated on March 1, 1982. “It was the last great work of President Guzmán,” Guerrero.
– The museum will with two Geography rooms: physical and human, “because if history does not have geography, it is not history”. 
– Inventory and restoration. According to Guerrero, the priority of the museum at this time is to restore and display the pieces from the different periods of Dominican history that are in the deposit.
