The kyiv State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation noted that constant missile attacks by Kremlin forces in the vicinity of some nuclear power plants can cause catastrophic consequences
Ukraine asked the IAEA intervene to achieve the withdrawal of Russian troops from the country’s nuclear power plants
The State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine (SNRIU) asked this Friday the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aid for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from the country’s nuclear power plants.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, the “constant attacks” with missiles in Ukraine by Russian troops in the vicinity of some nuclear power plants ignore the “possible risks and catastrophic consequences”.
“Such bombardments could potentially lead to a planetary catastrophe with consequences greater than the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents combined,” said Ukraine’s Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiological Safety, Oleh Korikov, in a statement.
In this sense, Ukraine has recorded cases of cruise missile overflights over the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine on April 16; on the Khmelnitskii nuclear power plant, on April 25; and on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, on April 28, as detailed in the letter.
The chief of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi
The organization pointed to the IAEA for the absence of a “clear and effective” position on Ukraine’s calls on the subject, which is why, according to the SNRIU, the representatives of Russia “are convinced of their impunity”.
In this sense, SNRIU called on IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to help Ukraine meet demands for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian nuclear power plants, as well as to demand an end to aerial bombing in the country.
RUSSIA’S OBJECTIVES
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky assured this Friday that Russia, at this moment, is trying to achieve the objectives that it had initially planned for the first days of their invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
“As expected, the situation is very difficult. The occupants are trying to achieve the objectives they hoped to achieve in the first days after February 24, at least after 100 days of war”, the Ukrainian president declared in his daily message to the Ukrainian population.
Zelensky has detailed that Russia has therefore concentrated “the maximum artillery” in the Donbas region, as well as large reserves to carry out missile and aircraft attacks.
Even so, the President of Ukraine pointed out that the Ukrainian Army is protecting the national territory with limited resources that he hopes to expand in the future. “We are doing everything we can to strengthen it. And we will become stronger”, added Zelensky, arguing that the Donbas region will end up in Ukrainian hands.
