Donald Rumsfeld, the former US defense secretary, has died at the age of 88. “With deep sadness we share the news of the death of Donald Rumsfeld, an American statesman, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather,” the family said. The former defense secretary died “in his beloved Taos” in New Mexico.
Rumsfeld served as Pentagon chief with both President Gerald Ford and George W. Bush and was the only one to hold this post twice. “History may remember him for the results obtained in over 60 years of public service – reads the note – but for those who know him best he will be remembered for his unwavering love for his wife Joyce, for his family and friends, for the integrity of a life dedicated to the country “.
