Eighth stage in La Manga del Mar Menor, in the Murcia region: the Dutchman of the Deceuninck-Quick Step beats the Venetian Dainese, who is increasingly growing. Sunday great clash in the mountains on the Alto de Velefique between Roglic leader and Bernal
The Dutch Fabio Jakobsen hits a fantastic second sprint in the eighth stage of the Vuelta, Santa Pola-La Manga del Mar Menor, 173 km, arriving in this tourist resort in the Murcia region. Jakobsen, 24, who at the Tour of Poland a year ago had been between life and death for several days due to the fall caused by his compatriot Groenewegen, beats the Paduan Alberto Dainese (Team Dsm), 23, who is increasingly growing after the third place of Albacete, and the Belgians Philipsen and Meeus. For the sprinter of the Deceuninck-Quick Step it is the 22nd success in his career, the 50th this season for the Belgian battleship of Patrick Lefevere. Nothing changes in the standings, with Primoz Roglic in the red jersey of leader with 8 “on the Austrian Grossschartner, 25” on the Spanish Mas, 36 “on the Colombian Lopez and 41” on Bernal. And on Sunday a great clash in the mountains in the ninth stage, the hardest of this first part of the Vuelta: Puerto Lumbreras-Alto de Velefique, 188 km and a very demanding uphill finish after a day of almost 4500 meters in altitude. We are in Andalusia, and this ascent is considered the Alpe d’Huez of Spain: the final climb measures 13.2 km at an average 6.4%, with peaks of 15% around the fourth kilometer. Monday then the first of the two days of rest in Almeria.
