A Nine months after the death of inmate Marisol Alvear Contreras, in the Valparaíso prison, the Human Rights Institute (INDH) filed a complaint for unlawful coercion or other cruel treatment against the woman. In August, the prosecution described the circumstances of her death as inconclusive.
The National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) filed a complaint for unlawful pressure or other cruel treatment that would have been committed against a 43-year-old inmate, who died inside the Valparaíso prison at the beginning of this 2022.
The family accused -through their lawyer- that the victim not only suffered a beating, but that there was also medical negligence that triggered her death.
She is Marisol Alvear Contreras , whose death became known in mid-February of this year in the Buenos Aires prison complex.

Death of inmate in Valparaíso prison
Alvear was complying with the precautionary measure of preventive detention for a cause related to drug trafficking, filed in the Alto Hospicio Guarantee Court.
His family -after learning of his death- filed a complaint for the crime of homicide, accusing medical negligence and even a beating that the 43-year-old woman would have suffered.
Nine months later, the INDH decided to join this investigation and also filed a complaint. Its regional director, Fernando Martínez, specified that they seek to establish the responsibilities behind Marisol’s death.
“Signs of non-fatal trauma&# 8221;
The report prepared by the Legal Medical Service established that “some signs of mild, non-lethal trauma were found on the corpse, and it is not possible to determine whether or not they were caused by third parties”.
However, the plaintiff attorney Cristián Canifrou, who represents Marisol’s family, was emphatic in maintaining that third parties participated in her death. Both direct and indirect.
In parallel to the criminal investigation, the Gendarmerie reported – in July of this year – that the administrative summary that was ordered in this case was in its final phase. Its content is unknown until now.
