From the conclusions reached by a new scientific theory, A huge satellite orbiting Ceres could provide the conditions for creating an alternative habitat for humankind.
The research was conducted by space physicist, astrobiologist and inventor Becca Janhonen, Director of the Earth and Space Observation Center at the Finnish Meteorological Institute and visiting professor at the University of Tartau in Estonia.
As the specialist explained, The gigantic, circular and flat structure could function as a satellite of the dwarf planet discovered in 1801, and at the same time, host about 50,000 people..
A piece of the asteroid beltWith a diameter of just 945 kilometers – total Earth 12,756 kilometers – Ceres is the largest astronomical object in the asteroid belt, the strip of the solar system located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
With the naked eye, this part of the Milky Way can only be observed by long-range telescopes installed on Earth under special conditions. An article published by science news site phys.org highlights the idea, conceived by Janhonen, that a human would build a superstructure near Ceres.
The basics raised by the Finnish scientist have been published on the arxiv.org website. There, Janhonen says Ceres has enough nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide to do the work, which will surround the planet in the manner of a massive spinning disk.
Elevator length of 1000 kmIn order to transfer materials from the surface of the small planet to the satellite, it will be necessary to use a space elevator, the length of which is about a thousand kilometers. In contrast, the superstructure will occupy no more than 1.6 km.
The attractiveness of a new living space can be achieved by rotating it at the appropriate speed. The satellite could contain plots of land for agriculture and recreation and could take advantage of solar energy by installing giant mirrors.
