After negative repercussions on President Jair Bolsonaro’s veto (no party) on the free distribution of tampons, the federal government released a statement on Friday night (8.Oct.2021) and said it will work to make the measure viable. The proposal established distribution to public school students and vulnerable women.
“Despite the vetoes, the Federal Government will work to enable the application of this measure, respecting the laws that involve the subject, to adequately meet the needs of this population”, said the Secom (Secretary of Social Communication) of the Presidency in a note.
On Thursday (7.Oct.2021), the president sanctioned a project that institutes the Menstrual Health Protection and Promotion Program. The Chief Executive, however, vetoed a section that established the free distribution of female tampons. The measure was the target of criticism by politicians from all walks of life. To power360, the federal deputy and one of the project’s authors, Tabata Amaral (PSB-SP), said that the veto will be overturned by Congress.

In justification of the veto, Bolsonaro said the project did not specify the costing measures for the program and, therefore, it did not have “alternative” and was “thank you to veto”.
