The early jet fighter that was mounted as a monument at the top of Motril continues to be undergoing restoration.
The HA200D bolt (arrow or bolt) was donated to the town by the Motril-based Air Surveillance Squadron (EVA-9) over two decades ago and was placed on a structure in front of the Repsol gas station on Enrique Martin Cuevas Avenue.
Once finally restored, which will hopefully coincide with the 40th annivesary of the arrival of the Spanish Air Force squadron in Motri, it will be mounted on the top roundabout at the end of the Poniente Round – this roundabout has an exit road that goes down to Hospital Santa Ana and another one that leads up to the Gorgoracha tunnel (A-4133).
But it seems that Mayor Luisa García Chamorro is planning on starting her own air force because she is going to approach the Ministry of Defense for another aircraft.

In the meantime, she said that the restored jet should be mounted in its new position next month, which is when the 40th anniversary of the EVA-9 in Motril comes round.
An interesting fact is that this jet was designed for the Spanish Air Force in the 50s by none other than Willy Messerchmidt, the famed designer of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 the Messerschmitt Bf 110 (Zerstörer) and the world’s first operational, jet-powered fighter aircraft during WW2, the Messerschmitt Me-262 (Swalbe). Guess it shows who grew up in the 60s making Airfix models …
Editorial comment: the proposed location might not be the safest place for the restored fighter jet. Where it originally stood was much safer, as it was opposite the gas station with its CCTV cameras so getting to the jet to ‘express an artistic talent with a can of spray paint’ was much harder. The new location is literally in the middle of nowhere so, unfortunately, it won’t take long for a spotty, teenage git to go to work on it. Just saying…
