If you live in California and have not yet voted on Governor Gavin Newsom’s recall proposal or have no plans to do so, please wake up. This is a situation in which apathy could have monumental consequences: California, which is not a state as progressive as one imagines but is still considerably more progressive than the whole of the country, may be on the verge of acquiring a governor trump player that he would never have won a normal election.
This would occur at a time when the control of state legislatures is especially crucial, because it shapes the response to the coronavirus. Governors such as Greg Abbott in Texas or Ron DeSantis in Florida, supporters of the MAGA (acronym in English for “returning America to its greatness”), not only refuse to impose the mandatory nature of masks or vaccines, but they try to avoid let others take precautions, issuing executive orders and supporting legislation that prohibits the imposition of such demands by local governments and even private companies. And that’s the type of governor California is likely to find itself with if the recall process goes through.
