“The impact of the pandemic has certainly aggravated the state of patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain. Where the pain was still at an acute or sub-acute level it has inexorably become a chronic and persistent pain that limits life ”. He said it Umberto Tarantino, of the Tor Vergata Polyclinic Foundation and president of the Italian Society for the Unified and Interdisciplinary Management of Musculoskeletal Pain and Algodystrophy (Si Guida), on the occasion of the opening of the third national congress, underway in Rome.
“Due to Covid-19, communication between patient and specialist has failed – continued Tarantino – the patient was treated in a self-referenced manner, with therapy that was certainly not adequate. It must also be considered that even chronicity linked to the use of drugs is absolutely dangerous. In this period, situations that can be corrected with rehabilitation have degenerated, leading patients to have to undergo surgery “.
In relation to the symposium, Tarantino specified: “The third congress of the Si-Guida society aims to provide an update on everything related to musculoskeletal pain. Musculoskeletal pain affects about 40/50% of people over the age of 65 and prevents them from having a normal quality of life. In the younger age groups, pain reduces their work activity. This pathology also creates a condition of drug dependence and psychological dependence on the problem “.
“In this congress meeting – he added – for example, issues related to arthrosis and the pain it can cause will be addressed. We will also take stock of lumbar pain; in fact, we know that 16% of people, at least once in their life, will go to tell the doctor that they have pain in the spine. We will address all the aspects related to pain, starting with the causes and then examining how acute pain can become chronic. Ours is an interdisciplinary management where orthopedists, rheumatologists and physiatrists work together to guide and treat the patient in the best way. Chronic pain, if it persists, can cause anxiety and depression and this worsens the patient’s quality of life. Finally, we will give advice, specifying when complex situations require surgical interventions or when a good rehabilitation, together with drug therapy, can give an incentive to bring life back to normal ”, he concluded.
