During the course of last month no fewer than 43 people lost their lives through drowning around the country, which is 47% down on last year, however.
If you take the whole of 2021 up to the 30th of August the figure reaches 183 deaths. Again, compared with the same time period of 2020, that’s 191 fewer deaths.
It should be taken into account, of course that the pandemic kept everybody indoors for three months during that period last year and travel restrictions kept a large proportion of inland inhabitants from reaching the coast to spend their holidays.

But even taking this into account, since records have been kept by the INA in 2015, until this year, the lowest number of drownings belonged to 2016 with 60 deaths.
As for where they took place, 47% of drownings took place in Cataluña (eight deaths), Comunidad Valenciana, (seven deaths) and the Balearic Island (six).
Three other autonomous regions had three deaths each: Andalucía, Canary Islands and Galicia. Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Extremadura and Murcia had two drownings each while Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra and País Vasco reported one drowning each.
As for the victims, 80% were males, 69% of which were older than 45. The majority of the deaths took place in the sea (55%).
Finally, 93% of the deaths took place where there was no lifeguard service, which says a lot in favor about the efficiency of lifeguards on our beaches.
