In the middle of the dialogues that the Government maintains with senators to define a candidate for National Prosecutor, Iván Moreira (UDI) described the attitude of the Executive as “harassment”.
Opposition senators said the government is “almost harassing them” to have votes for the next National Prosecutor. A new controversy only 5 days before the legal deadline for President Gabriel Boric to choose the letter that will succeed Jorge Abbott.
Among the four candidates to lead the Public Ministry are the Aysén regional prosecutor, Carlos Palma; the Central North persecutor, José Morales;the director of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Unit, Marta Herrera; and former persecutor Ángel Valecia.
The government insists that negotiations with senators continue. This is because the name chosen by the Executive finally goes to Congress, where it must be ratified or not, by 2/3 of the congressmen.

Visits are “almost harassment”
Ivan Moreira, a UDI senator, harshly expressed that the visits by the Minister of Justice, Marcela Ríos, is practically “harassment”, and that they have reiterated to him that Marta Herrera does not have the votes, according to him, because she is seen as the continuity by Jorge Abbott.
“You have to say things as they are. I believe that the Minister of Justice, with her permanent visits to the Senate, is already turning into a kind, almost harassment, to try to get votes in the Senate”, said the parliamentarian.
Meanwhile, Senator Manuel José Ossandón (RN), maintained that not even the government is clear about the election.
“We need clearer guidelines from the Government, because they clearly do not agree. But, on the other hand, I am concerned about the violence and the number of disqualifications that have been leaked to the press to destroy the other candidate. We are talking about that we are going to elect the National Prosecutor, who has to direct the investigations,” he said.
“Surprises” ruled out in election of National Prosecutor
Carolina Tohá, Vice President of the Republic and Minister of the Interior, assured that there will be no surprises and that they will occupy the entire legal term they have to define the election.
“The proposal to the Senate will be presented within the deadlines that are foreseen. There will be no surprise in that regard. There have been many conversations and many considerations are taken into account (…) That is the job that is up to us, to listen, ponder, take into account the advantages or risks of the different alternatives”, explained the secretary Status.
Let’s remember that the Executive has until next Monday, November 21, to choose the letter that will lead the Public Ministry.
