Formal power
The 60-year-old Míguel Diaz-Canel will probably take over from him. Diaz-Canel also took over from him as president of the country in 2018. Castro had not been president of Cuba since 2018, but had formal power.

According to Koopman, it will at least remain that way in the short term: “The regime has no interest in changing these things, it is concerned with survival in terms of power.”
