The improvement of the quality of the air in the city is a goal that is more topical than ever, and the means of transport for individuals as well as businesses need to adapt to reduce their impact on the environment. To address these issues, Ford presents a new enabling technology with its latest utility vehicles plug-in hybrids to operate in a mode 100% electric, and this in an automatic way as soon as you enter predefined areas.

Thanks to a feature of geofencing (geolocation in real time), the utility Ford Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid is capable of automatically switch between 100% electric, as soon as it comes in specific areas such as congestion, low emission zones (EPZS), in the vicinity of schools or in warehouses professional. Of course, the 100% electric will only be enabled if the battery is sufficiently charged to allow for its operation.

These “green zones” are predefined on the map, but it is also possible to create new custom. Leaving these areas, the vehicle can then automatically switch back to a mode of conduct more appropriate, for example, making a call to the thermal engine in order to benefit of greater autonomy while also charging its battery.

Improve the quality of the air

If the implementation of the EPZ (or Low Emission Zones) still debate in France, Ford is conducting studies in London, United Kingdom, Cologne in Germany and Valencia in Spain. The american manufacturer has concluded that the hybrid vehicles are capable of rolling in all-electric mode may contribute to improve the quality of urban air. In fact, 75% of the distance travelled in the city by the participants of the study performed in mode 100% electric, thereby contributing to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles in urban areas.

This new feature of geofencing will be available from the autumn 2020 on the Ford Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid, but will also eventually be available on other models in the Ford range, whether utilities or private vehicles. Anything to strengthen the attractiveness of the commercial vehicles of the blue oval, which also benefit now of the 4G series.
