As part of the event Goodwood Revival, scheduled between 17 and 19 September, Mercedes will continue to pay particular attention to the memory of Sir Stirling Moss, legendary driver who is considered among the strongest in motoring history, despite never having won the title of Formula 1 world champion. The Briton, who passed away in April 2020, has been very attached to the Star brand, and in fact, his former employers will bring the car to Goodwood 300 SLR ‘722’, with which he won the 1955 Mille Miglia (alongside the journalist Denis Jenkinson: other times), and the W 196 R with which, in the same year, Moss finished second in the F1 championship behind the ‘cannibal’ Juan Manuel Fangio.
The Goodwood Revival uses the traditional circuit for presentation racing and historic racing car racing. Between 1948 and 1966, numerous and spectacular races of sports cars and Formula 1, as well as motorcycling, took place on the 3.8 kilometer circuit. Goodwood’s global reputation in motoring has been built on many traditions and is based on these events. Among other things, the Goodwood Revival 2021 is dedicated to Sir Stirling Moss. The pilot would have smiled with irony: his retirement from racing, at the age of 32 and therefore very young for the time, was linked to an accident remedied in Goodwood on 30 April 1962.
The two former Moss Silver Arrows, with their distinctive sound, are each powered by an eight-cylinder in-line engine. They are ideal cars for the event: the Goodwood Revival has become an established event in addition to the Festival of Speed, and attracts a lot of interest from fans. 1998 marked the full return of the Goodwood Circuit.
