Individuals living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) run a greater risk of being exposed to sudden cardiac death than people who do not have HIV, especially if the virus is not well controlled or if they have other heart disease risk factors.
The new Research was published in the scientific journal Journal of the American Heart Association.
HIV and Sudden Cardiac Death: Here’s What Research Says
“People living with HIV are already known to have a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, blood clots in the lungs and peripheral artery disease”, has stated Matthew S. Freiberg, MD, M.Sc., lead author of the study, holder of the chair of cardiology, Dorothy And Laurence Grossman and professor of medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee.
“We know that among people with HIV, those who have compromised immune systems, for example a low total number of CD4 cells + T., appear to have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease than those with high CD4 cell counts + T.“, Freiberg continued. “It is unclear whether a compromised immune system is a risk factor for sudden cardiac death ”.
