The first day of free practice for the Ducati Lenovo Team riders ended in a positive way on the historic Silverstone circuit, the scene of the British GP this weekend, the twelfth round of the 2021 MotoGP season. Thanks to the track conditions, which remained dry throughout the day despite the overcast skies, both Jack Miller and Pecco Bagnaia were able to work consistently on their Desmosedici GPs, managing to be fast at the end of the two sessions held today.
Fifth after FP1 this morning, Miller was able to improve his best time during FP2 by more than a second and a half, taking second place in 512 thousandths from the top of the ranking, with a time of 1: 59.829. Even Bagnaia, eighth this morning after the first round, was able to improve further in the afternoon; the Italian driver, thanks to a fast lap of 2: 00.102, closes on Friday in sixth position, 273 thousandths behind his teammate.
Jack Miller: “I am very happy to be back at Silverstone: it is an old fashioned track with a lot of curves, where it is always a lot of fun to race. Compared to 2019, the last year in which the GP took place here, the asphalt conditions have improved a lot and this is also positive in terms of tire wear. My feeling with the bike, compared to two years ago, has improved a lot and this also shows how the Desmosedici GP has made really big steps forward in recent years! We have a really fantastic bike this year, as evidenced by the fact that we are always competitive on every track. Now we will continue to work hard to try to improve again tomorrow. Today there were already many fans in the stands, and I hope to be able to give them a great show this Sunday ”.
Francesco Bagnaia: “I am really happy with the work we have done on this first day. In PL1 I had suffered a bit from the lack of grip, but in the afternoon we managed to improve a lot by taking an important step forward with the bike. This afternoon it was particularly cold and this made a time attack difficult, so I preferred not to take too many risks. In any case we are sixth and this is a sign that we are doing a great job. Quartararo and Márquez were faster today, but I’m not worried: I am convinced that tomorrow we too will be able to take another big step forward ”.
