Many had warned Pol Espargarò when he had decided to leave the KTM project to embrace the Honda HRC, remembering the difficulty of going fast on that bike in the last years of all the riders, Marc Marquez excluded. Even well-known champions such as Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo had to raise the white flag and say goodbye to the World Championship after their experience in Honda, a sign of how much only Marquez is able to tame the RC213V. Even the performances of Pol Espargarò, who just a year ago had collected five podiums with the KTM, seem to confirm this trend, given that the Spaniard has 18 points less than his more famous teammate, despite having run two races more than him. .
In general, ‘Polycio’ was unable to establish its own connection with the bike, so much so that it was unable to obtain a better placement than eighth in Qatar and Le Mans. However, the situation is tending to worsen with no way out given that both the Styrian and Austrian GPs saw him sadly finish in sixteenth position, even outside the points zone. Espargarò’s disappointment is palpable: “My driving style it is based on the grip of the rear tire, especially when entering corners using the rear brake. But I can’t do any of this, I have to learn everything again. It hurts to say it, but that’s the way it is“. The 30-year-old Iberian tried several times to overturn the bike, without appreciable results: “We tried different setups from Qatar, sometimes we go better and sometimes worse, it depends on the track. I have problems every weekend and I don’t know what to do. Everyone works hard, but my frustration grows because I can’t drive the way I want to. Last year in Austria I took pole and fought to win both races. A year later being so behind is painful ”.
The Honda HRC rider has no idea how to get out of such an intricate situation: “In the last race the feeling had completely disappeared and I was really slow. In practice and in the warm up I was fast, but in the race I was super, super slow, even a second, and I don’t know why. I can’t stop the bike, use the rear brake and turn the way I want. Finding a way out is difficult, but we’ll keep trying“, Concluded Espargarò.
