The title ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ does not immediately go to Edward. That only happens after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Normally, the title should go to Prince Charles, as he is Prince Philip’s eldest son. But since Charles is already the heir to the throne, and Edward has followed more in his father’s footsteps, the Queen thought it appropriate to give the title to Edward. Edward was involved in the same charities and had the same beliefs as Philip. He is, among other things, the face of the Edinburgh International Festival, and the president of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. For the time being he is still going through life as the Earl of Wessex. He is married to Sophie Rhys-Jones and together they have a daughter, Lady Louise. Sophie will become the Duchess of Edinburgh after Elizabeth’s death.
Prince Charles does not take over any other titles from his father, and will remain the Prince of Wales.
