At the Zapad-2021 exercise, the Armed Forces of Russia and Belarus showed their readiness to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Union State. This was announced on September 17 by the Belarusian Defense Minister Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin.

He added that the states participating in the exercises do not consider any of the countries as an enemy, however, during the exercises it was once again confirmed that Russia in the shortest possible time could regroup troops on the territory of Belarus, as well as prepare and repel the offensive of any enemy.

The Russian-Belarusian strategic exercises “West-2021” were attended by about 200 thousand military personnel, more than 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including over 290 tanks, more than 240 guns, multiple launch rocket systems and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships. The troops trained at five training grounds in Belarus and nine in Russia, in the Baltic Sea.
On September 10, the active phase of the exercise began. During this time, the Baltic Fleet military organized the defense of the sea coast and an amphibious landing operation with the involvement of the Northern Fleet marines. In addition, for the first time in Russia, a massive landing of more than 600 military personnel in full gear was carried out at night. The landing was carried out by the Pskov airborne unit. In addition to the personnel, 30 units of military equipment were parachuted.
The events were attended by servicemen of military units and subdivisions of the Western Military District, representatives of the leadership headquarters and personnel of the military contingents of the armed forces of Armenia, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
Exercises “West-2021” are the final stage of joint training of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation this year. The joint strategic exercise (SSU) of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus is held every two years in accordance with the decision made by the heads of the two states.
