Russia, first results of the legislative: Putin’s party in sharp decline, boom of the communists
Vladimir Putin’s party has once again won the legislative elections in Russia, however, with a sharp decline in consensus compared to the results of 2016, while the Communist Party has almost doubled the votes compared to the previous consultations.
According to the preliminary results communicated by the electoral commission, relating to 9% of the seats, United Russia is still the first party in the country, with 38.75% of the votes, down sharply from 54.2% recorded in 2016, while the Communists they are 25.06% compared to 13.34% five years ago.
According to the results of the exit polls, there will be no new party in the Duma: only the Liberal Democrats, a far-right formation, and the right Russian left, already present in parliament, would have in fact exceeded the 5% threshold, while New People, the newly formed party that has garnered the votes of Alexei Navalny’s supporters is swinging around the threshold.
The polls had been open for three days, from 17 to 19 September, with the possibility of voting also online.

During the election campaign, supporters of dissident Alexei Navalny, currently detained, had invited citizens of the Russians to vote strategically, choosing the candidates who were most likely to defeat United Russia in each constituency. Both Apple and Google have removed from their stores the application used by activists to give voting indications, harshly condemned by the Russian authorities and by United Russia itself.
