“What is happening in Sicily – he underlines – is not linked only to the large influx of tourists but to the fact that there is a substantial part of the population that has not been vaccinated. There are Regions that have worked well on this front and are being promoted. , others that are a bit late, postponed to September, and then there is Sicily which, given the results, must be rejected “. As for Sardinia “there is a situation in the balance between white and yellow, perhaps not only linked to vaccinations but also has difficulties in organizing hospital structures”, explains Bassetti.
As for the third dose “I would not want the departure at the end of the year for some to be too late. Perhaps it is worthwhile, for the frail and immunosuppressed, to think about starting with the booster even earlier”, he says to Adnkronos Salute, commenting on what was said by Sergio Abrignani, immunologist, member of the scientific technical committee, to ‘Il Corriere della Sera’: “Third dose of vaccine between the end of this year and the beginning of the next”.
“However, the question is more about who to take the third dose than when to leave – he adds – we identify who can benefit from the third dose: ultra fragile, transplanted, dialysed, immunosuppressed, some over 80 years old: the cases must be studied and then offered the third dose . I do not think it is a problem of time, because – he explains – if one has not responded to the immunization of the vaccine, the third dose should be given as soon as possible. So, rather than saying ‘let’s do it for everyone at the end of the year’, it would be better to say first to whom we do it – concludes the infectious disease specialist – and if it is necessary to do it as soon as possible “.
