Tomorrow evening the final of the Italy-England European Championships is becoming a “state affair”. On the other hand, it is no mystery to anyone that both the royals of England and the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson are very fans as well as the Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and the Head of State Sergio Mattarella.
It was particularly pleased, therefore, to the upper echelons of the Republic that the number one of the European commission and protégé of the German leader Angela Merkel, Ursula von der Leyen openly sided in favor of the Belpaese: “Her heart is with the blue team, then the president will cheer for Italy on Sunday ”: the spokesman of the European Commission Eric Mamer thus replied (even partially in Italian) to the question of an English journalist about the preferences of President von der Leyen for the final of the European Championships.
A full-blown “notice to mariners”. This was particularly pleasing because there were too many fears now widespread even among the top institutional leaders of the beautiful country about possible favoritism for the home team. On the other hand, it would have been very strange if the president of the European commission had sided with a nation, the only one so far, which preferred Brexit rather than stay in Europe (at least in the institutional and political one).
But there is more because the usual informed goods swear that the exit of von der Leyen was not at all casual but that it came after some important (very “diplomatic”) solicitation from the beautiful country.

A way as eloquent as it is effective to send a signal to those in charge and try to rebalance the situation in time in order to avoid unpleasant “unequal treatment” against the national team (especially since tomorrow evening the German Bastian will be at the head of the Var. Dankert, with his fellow countrymen Christian Gittelmann and Marco Fritz). For the series: better to be safe than sorry.
