Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, or simply Elizabeth II, has occupied the throne of British royalty for the past 70 years, breaking the record of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, who ruled for over 63 years.
Queen since 1952, when she assumed the throne after the death of her father, King George V. Her uncle, Edward VIII, was crowned ruler of the United Kingdom, but resigned to marry an American. Therefore, the power was automatically inherited by Elizabeth.
