It was December 8, 2017 when Jean Todt received the third and final mandate to lead the International Motoring Federation. The regulation does not foresee a fourth candidacy, and therefore at the end of next winter the FIA will have to elect a new president. The date to be circled in red is December 17, when Todt’s term (who has also reached the age limit) will have expired. There are currently two candidates for the succession of the French: Mohammed ben Sulayem and Graham Stoker. Motorsport UK president David Richards has not formalized his candidacy, he will have until November 5th.
The first, 14-time Middle East rally champion, launched the campaign ‘FIA for members‘, which aims to overturn the decision-making mechanisms within the Federation: from the classic top-down to an unprecedented bottom-up. Outside the Anglicisms, the members will identify and influence federal policies, respecting the democratic principles, the tradition of the FIA and the intentions of inclusiveness dear to Liberty Media. Stoker, federal vice president for sport and member of the FIA World Motor Sport Council, has expanded the range of action even further: the Federation’s policies must not only look to their members, but to everyone. Like? Through a vast program, which includes the priority to safety, economic and environmental sustainability (other issues dear to the Federation) and the growth of the motoring fan base.
As the dean of motoring journalism Dieter Rencken also pointed out, the similarity of the programs does not correspond to a similarity of characters: Ben Sulayem has always been an engine enthusiast, also privileged for his family of origin, but who has achieved results inside and outside the track; Stoker, says Rencken, “he looks like a typical British lawyer […] and it was the Todt’s deputy for the past 12 years. This, in turn, speaks volumes: despite having had a wide choice, Todt has nominated him three times to supervise motorsport.“.
