A merchant was murdered in an attempted robbery in the Peñarol neighborhoodon Sunday morning and his wife was injured, according to the Ministry of the Interior. There were seven homicides in that neighborhood during the month of May.
Around 10:40 in the morning, both merchants were working in the warehouse when a criminal entered to steal. When offering resistance, the assailant opened fire and wounded the 63-year-old man –who died at the scene– and the woman –who was taken to a health center after being shot in the back–, reported Underlined.< /i> The criminal fled.
According to what neighbors declared to the same outlet, the couple had already been robbed in the more than 20 years that they had the warehouse, which is why which had security cameras.
The Minister of the Interior, Luis Alberto Heber, declared that he had “a lot to regret” and said that those who ask for more security “are right to complain”: “What happens is that sometimes it is difficult to foresee this type of crime. Unfortunately we have to mourn this murder, “he mentioned in dialogue with Telemundo.
In that sense, he added that they are “very concerned” and are investigating the case. “We have a strong line of investigation. Hopefully we will be successful these days to catch the criminal who through robbery kills a worker such as a grocer.”
Regarding the actions of the ministry, Heber expressed that he trusts the plan of security stipulated for that zone of Montevideo. “We have a good presence in that area, but we are going to have to keep reinforcing. Unfortunately, crime runs away as we fight. We have to keep running it,” said the minister.
On the other hand, Heber said that he “fully” justifies those who demand more security. “You are right to complain. What happens is that sometimes it is difficult to foresee this type of crime. Unfortunately we have to regret this homicide”, he stated. This was the seventh homicide that occurred in the Peñarol neighborhood so far in the month of May.
Between the early hours of Tuesday, May 10, and until the night of Wednesday, May 11, there were five murders in the area: two men shot to death, two found semi-calcined and the last one, in addition to semi-calcined, was found dismembered. During this succession of murders, the Justice ordered, in the middle of the month, eight raids in the area that ended with several detainees.
Only during this last weekend there were two more homicides in the Peñarol neighborhood: the sixth case was that of a man who died of two shots to the head “without saying a word,” according to Montevideo Portal, and the last was that of the storekeeper, which occurred in on Sunday morning while working in his shop.
According to figures communicated by the Interior on April 8, during January, February and March 2022 there was a 33% increase in homicides compared to the figures for the previous year and a decrease of 6.30% in robberies.
Days before publishing these data, the Minister of the Interior had declared that a increase in the number of homicides, although “there is no sense of insecurity.”
