The announcement of the retirement of Kimi Raikkonen at the end of the season, communicated via his Instagram profile by the Finnish driver himself, unleashed a wave of emotion in the F1 Circus. There were many fans who paid tribute to the 2007 world champion on social networks and not only, beloved by fans all over the world for a unique and particular style, so distant from that of all the other colleagues in the category. His career was somewhat circular, coming to a close twenty years from the start in the same team that had held him in baptism, that Sauber now renamed Alfa Romeo.
Therefore, at the end of this very special day, an official message from the team principal of the Hinwil team could not be missing, Frédéric Vasseur. The French manager, who had strongly wanted Raikkonen to join the team at the end of 2018 – when the exchange with Charles Leclerc had materialized – spent splendid words to celebrate the veteran of the paddock.
“There is no driver like Kimi Räikkönen. His presence, his charisma and his unique attitude – declared Vasseur, paying homage to the Finnish – combined with the innate skill that prompted this team to give him a chance in 2001, they made him one legend of our sport in a way that numbers and statistics struggle to convey. It has been a pleasure to work with him over the years and I think I speak for everyone at Alfa Romeo Racing – from the workshop in Hinwil to the garage here in Zandvoort – when I say that a driver like Kimi has written some indelible pages in the history of our team and our sport “.
