It certainly wasn’t an easy weekend Sebastian Vettel at Silverstone. The German driver had a very good start in Sunday’s race, immediately finding himself fighting with his old rival Fernando Alonso for the sixth and seventh position. Inside the Luffield curve, however, the four-time world champion – trying to resist the attack outside the Asturian – turned around, ending up in a spin. From that moment the race of the former Ferrari driver is practically over, complete with a sad retirement on the 40th lap. The real ‘highlight’ of the Heppenheim native, however, came well after the checkered flag, when the entire Silverstone audience was now returning to their homes.
In fact, Vettel, together with a group of fans, armed himself with bags and work gloves going up to the stands to clean them up. A beautiful, useful and extremely significant gesture, which silences those who criticize public figures who are fighting for a cause, accusing them of ‘not doing enough’ or ‘not getting their hands dirty’. The German has recently spent a lot of time on environmental issues related to recycling and sustainability, becoming testimonial of various projects aimed at protecting the environment and biodiversity. Last night’s gesture represented a further concrete and visible step in this direction.
