Mafia II – welcome back in the family.
This test was made from a digital version sent by the publisher on Xbox One X with all the latest updates to the game.
In February 1945, in the city of Empire Bay, we discover Vito Scaletta, the son of immigrant sicilian who makes small robberies with his childhood friend Joe Barbaro. Alas, during a break-in missed, Vito is arrested by the police. It will be returned in Sicily within the u.s. army. During operation, the Vito is injured and will be allowed to return to Empire Bay. The scenario of Mafia II begins at this time. During the few months of the war, that Joe will have made good contacts in the city and it will transform the permission of Vito in final return.
Vito will have to earn a living to pay off the debts of his deceased father and to be able to meet the needs of his mother and his sister. Over small bumps and small robberies with people more and more important in the city of Empire Bay, Soon and Joe will gently bring different Mafia family in the city.
In this remastered, teams of Hangar 13 (the teams that are responsible of the porting of the game) have not affected the content of the original game. Thus, we find the basic content and we do not have the right unfortunately to additional content (which will be the case with the remake of Mafia in September).
Thus, as the original game we have a game with a storyline very well put together and of high quality. Although the appreciation of a story is specific to each person, it must be acknowledged that the storyline of Mafia II is still a small effect even ten years later. We have the joy of seeing all the facets of the Mafia. Of the contraband, to the settlement account through espionage, surveillance and the respect imposed by the fact of being part of a family, Mafia II succeeded perfectly to us immersed in this fascinating world.
🍋 TEST OF THE REMASTERED 🍋
Attention, throughout this test we will focus on for the whole game, but the final score will represent the score and the quality of the Remastered and not the game itself. The idea of this test is, therefore, to note the quality of the porting and not the game and its original content in 2010.
Mafia II – Empire Bay, what a pleasure to find you
© 2K Games
Already in 2010, the team of 2K Czech have done a pretty impressive. The city of Empire Bay is blatantly credibility. She is alive, rather large with a varied landscape. In addition, the game begins in the winter and we have the immense joy of discovering it in a nice white coat with the snow in abundance, patches of ice, and roads that slide. Roads and sidewalks, because if you pay attention you can see some NPCS who slip and fall because of the ice. Throughout the game, you will have the chance to discover this city in the summer with beautiful parks. In summer as in winter, it is a pleasure to us to walk in the city.
Alas, if in 2010 it was almost perfect, in 2020 on PS4 and Xbox One the city seems a little empty. We would have liked the additions of vehicles and NPC’s in the streets for as much credibility and realism than ten years ago. But from the first minutes, we dive into the nostalgia and it is all the same a sacred pleasure of meeting Vito and Joe.
A technique is always a little hectic

The main flaw of the game in 2010, this defect is still present unfortunately in 2020. We can even say that the default is even more embarrassing today. Technically, the game is far from flawless. The gunfights are quite soft and far from exciting. Just take cover and take aim quickly two times to automatically perform a headshot.
The target is very random and not at all practical. Slow, not precise, quite frustrating and random, if in 2010 were already a little embarrassed, in 2020 it is really disturbing. We would have liked that a work can be done on this point to make it more enjoyable.
At the level of the dubbing, then again this is not quite perfect. Some replicas lack credibility (especially VF), and during missions some of the texts are quite repetitive. Alas, all of the small flaws of the original game are still present by 2020 and this automatically brings a lot of frustration during the game.

At the level of the driving, Mafia II was doing pretty not bad in 2010, and always comes out not too bad in 2020. Driving in the snow is clearly different than driving on asphalt dry. It is necessary to pay attention to the ice, it is necessary to anticipate our stops and it becomes a real challenge in the pursuit.
In the summer, on a dry road, the driving is less impressive and we can even say that this last is more picky. If you change vehicles, and that these could become too powerful, it will be necessary to properly manage the acceleration to avoid having to skate and to be able to drive it as it should be.
If nothing has been touched at the level of the technique and the original game (in gameplay and content), there has been, however, improvements visual. And again, everything is not perfect and it is rather uneven.

Some of the textures have been completely redone in order to make this Mafia II even more beautiful. Other textures have been reworked so that we can have a game more beautiful than in 2010. However, the overall game is not incredible. Yes, in comparison with the version for PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, we have a Mafia II – Definitive Edition more beautiful on PS4 and Xbox One. However, the difference is not incredible with the PC version of ultra original. Other textures, however, still leave something to be desired.
The biggest problem with the game lies in its optimization. Mafia II — Definitive Edition is a disaster of bugs. Among the vehicles that pass through the map, between the textures that intertwine with each other, between the vehicles that appear on the map in one shot, the hard lockups back that do spit the game as well as the big bugs of lights that make the screen completely white, with huge drops in framerates, the game is at times unplayable.

More than once, we had to restart the game. Is a moment was completely bugged and we fall to 5-6 FPS per second. Or other bugs that disturbed the progress of our history. Without counting the times where the game crashed all alone and the only option was to restart it. It is a pity, because we have the impression that the game is even less optimized than in 2010.
The viewing distance is very bad and we have a lot of textures that appear at the last moment. Vehicles, NPCS, objects such as telephone booths, garbage cans, etc… It is sometimes very frustrating especially when you are with a vehicle that is a little quick, it is catastrophic. A shame, because the original version was not suffering from all the bugs.
Mafia II, a multitude of small details
© Presse-citron.net
The (very) many bugs are even more frustrating when you see precisely how Mafia II is a great game that, ten years later, does not lose its charm. The game is full of small details that made their already small effect in 2010, but us enthusiasts will still be in 2020.
The fact of having to adhere to the code of the road under the penalty of being fined by the police if you are driving too fast or if you do not observe the red lights. The fact of being able to pay the fine, bribe the police or run away. The ability to steer a vehicle by breaking the window or jimmying the lock. All the elements that allow us to customize our vehicle, the license plate up to the painting and the reasons for the body.
The small details of the NPCS that make their little lives, being arrested by the police, NPCS who slip and fall in the winter because of the ice on the sidewalk. The possibility of feed or drink to restore our life, or even the few elements of RP that allow us to dress our character through a variety of clothing available for purchase.

My opinion on Mafia II – Definitive Edition
If we are to judge Mafia II on its core content, the game is as good as ever. Of course, some sequences and some things have not aged well, but the game still remains a classic. A pleasant city, a credible, original and of quality. Small details and elements of RP which are still of very good points. Mafia II was an excellent game in 2010, it is still a game, a open-world a GTA Like high-quality in 2020.
On the remaster, this is still a small disappointment today. Visually, the teams of Hangar 13 have done their job well. Some rare sequences appear to be more pretty in the original version, but most of the improvements are a credit to the title with textures that have been modified to see completely redone.
Where to pre-order the various editions of Mafia on PS4 and Xbox One ?
Alas, it really is in the technique that the problem arises. The bugs are too many. What’s more, these are bugs that will really annoy the progress of your story with a game that will crash forcing you to restart it. Other bugs are less important spoil any of the experience with objects and vehicles that will appear at the last moment on the screen. Not to mention the viewing distance, which is very average. A shame, because Mafia II really deserved a portage to the small onions to make it even more perfect !
