The lesson of Hungary does not seem to have been learned by theAston Martin. At the end of the strangest race in the entire history of Formula 1, the Silverstone team was able to ‘celebrate’ the fifth place obtained by Sebastian Vettel, thanks to yesterday’s splendid qualifying, but he also remedied a bad figure with the second car, the one driven by Lance Stroll. The Canadian was in fact penalized by 10 seconds for an infringement of the rules. Nothing particularly relevant for the final result of the race, given that Stroll was still ranked 18th and with this sanction he simply ‘slips’ to the last place of the ranking.
The team during the interruption of the race – when the ‘countdown’ towards the end of the three hours was interrupted by the race direction – has replaced the rear wing of the Lance Stroll car, changing its specifications to mount one that was obviously more suited to the track conditions. However, this operation is prohibited by the regulation. In the statement explaining the sanction, the FIA acknowledged the exceptional circumstances of this Grand Prix. However, he reiterated the irregularity of the action. The punishment was 10 seconds, given that the imposition of starting from the pit lane – which according to the commissioners would have been the appropriate sanction – obviously proved to be ineffective. Yet another distraction for the Silverstone team, after the mocking disqualification suffered by Vettel in Budapest.
