19 out of 20 seats on the 2022 Formula 1 starting grid have now been assigned, more or less officially. Only one vacancy remains, that of Alfa Romeo. The Biscione has yet to define who will be the teammate of the newcomer Valtteri Bottas. So far there were three candidates: Antonio Giovinazzi, current ‘owner’ standard bearer of the Hinwil team, Nyck De Vries, which would ensure an important rapprochement of the team to the Mercedes group, e Guanyu Zhou, F2 talent and driver who would bring with him rather ‘substantial’ economic reasons. However, a further contender is now emerging from Portugal. Certainly less popular than the other three in terms of the possibility of occupying the much-desired Alfa seat, but no less gifted in terms of talent.
Antonio Felix Da Costa, a driver who grew up in the Red Bull nursery, has already been close to Formula 1 in the past, but has never managed to enter the Circus environment as a protagonist. Your candidacy for a job in Alfa Romeo has been relaunched on your country’s website, AutoSport.pt, who pointed out that the former Formula E champion has less chance than his direct rivals. However, the Lusitanian site also pointed out that some talks between Da Costa’s manager – former driver Tiago Monteiro – and the Swiss team actually took place. A sign that the Portuguese card is still part of the deck of possibilities.
However, Da Costa would have at the moment also other offers on the table, from the possibility of renewing in the electric series with the DS Techeetah team, to the passage to other teams in the same championship, to the jump in IndyCar. There are also other interesting options for him at the Endurance level. These offers, however, mainly concern 2023, a particularly important year, especially for the WEC, with the entry of many official manufacturers involved in the Hypercar project. In the meantime, however, as long as a window remains open, Da Costa’s candidacy is also present for the Alfa seat.
