Covid: curfew returns to Barcelona. Catalonia is one of the most affected regions in Europe
The curfew will return to Barcelona from tonight, two months after the end of the state of emergency in Spain. This was authorized by the Supreme Court of Catalonia, accepting the request of the Catalan government to reintroduce the curfew until one to 6 in the morning in 161 centers in the region, starting tonight.
The decision of Catalonia, one of the areas most affected in Europe by the recent increase in infections due to the Delta variant, follows that taken by the Valencia region, which this week obtained authorization to reintroduce the curfew in 32 municipalities. Today the Navarre region has also declared that it intends to ask the green light of the judiciary to impose a curfew, following that of Cantabria. In recent days, the request from the Canary Islands was rejected by the court. The Generalitat of Catalonia has already limited gatherings to a maximum of 10 people and banned all public gatherings after half past midnight.
The curfew will be applied in all centers of the autonomous community with more than 5,000 inhabitants and an incidence of over 400 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. In addition to Barcelona, popular tourist destinations such as Lloret de Mar, Sitges and Salou will also be subject to the measure. Over the past 14 days, more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 population have been recorded in Catalonia, with double the total cases compared to the average in Spain. In Barcelona, the incidence is 1,145.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The curfew had already been lifted on 9 May, with the end of the state of emergency imposed across Spain in October 2020.
