The EU wants to be CO2 neutral by 2050. The package of measures includes twelve legislative proposals – and causes controversy in advance.
Brussels – internal combustion engine, kerosene tax, emissions trading: on Wednesday (July 14th) the EU Commission will present its plans for a climate-friendly restructuring of the economy. She wants to bring the end of all conventional gasoline and diesel cars on the way.
“In the past few weeks, around a dozen manufacturers in the EU announced that they would switch to emission-free production between 2028 and 2035. Nevertheless, we will set a time frame by which all cars must be emission-free, ”said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen Süddeutsche Zeitung. Otherwise there would be a lack of planning security and climate neutrality will not be achieved by 2050.

“How they change their production is up to the manufacturers themselves,” emphasized the politician. “They know best how to develop new cars or new fuels.” In addition to electric cars, combustion engines can also be climate-neutral if they run on hydrogen or synthetic fuels. If produced correctly, these energy sources do not ultimately emit any additional greenhouse gases.
EU climate package: Altmaier calls for clarity for various branches of industry
The “Fit for 55” package aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the EU by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The EU then wants to be CO2 neutral by 2050. There was some criticism in the run-up: environmentalists are not going far enough with the plans, while industry representatives and states that are still heavily dependent on coal fear drastic measures.
Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) called for clarity on Wednesday about the consequences of the measures for various branches of industry. “Anything that helps us to protect the climate more quickly and more comprehensively without jeopardizing our competitiveness is a step in the right direction,” he said.
