US authorities approved a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for people with weakened immune systems, that is, transplant recipients, cancer patients, as well as other disorders to better protect them as the Delta variant continues to increase the cases of contagion in this country.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will apply to millions of Americans who are especially vulnerable due to organ transplants, certain cancers, or other disorders. Several other countries, including France and Israel, have similar recommendations.

It is more difficult for vaccines to boost an immune system suppressed by certain drugs or diseases, so these patients do not always get the same protection as otherwise healthy people, and small studies suggest that, for some at least, an extra dose may do the trick.
“This action tries to ensure that the most vulnerable are better protected against COVID-19,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, before the FDA announcement.
Importantly, the decision only applies to this high-risk group, about 3 percent of American adults. Is not a chance for booster doses for the general population.
Instead, health authorities consider the additional dose to be part of the initial prescription of the covid-19 vaccine for the immunosuppressed. For example, France since April has encouraged these patients to receive a third dose four weeks after their second regular injection.
Moreover, US health officials continue to closely monitor whether the immunity of the average person decreases enough to require reinforcements for allBut for now, vaccines continue to offer strong protection for the general population.
