Honda’s touring flagship (this side of the GoldWing) dates back to a time when the brand was still leading the debate in every segment. In 1990 the ST1100 was launched; and with a transverse V4 developed specifically for the ‘Pan’ with no cost-cutting measures or a view to use in other models, the Pan European is still a great touring bike even today with excellent operational reliability and comfort, including for passengers. The only thing missing is a sixth gear for slightly more comfortable highway miles.
In 2002 the 1,300cc version appeared; all in all, a suit from the same cloth, but with a more powerful block. The Pan European remained in the range until 2016, in 2017 it permanently disappeared from the Honda line-up. A real successor never came, so many Pan drivers continue to swear by the model. It remains a popular motorcycle with which you can continue to drive almost without any problems until the end of time.
And you can take that quite literally, because a high mileage does not hurt a Pan at all. More than 100,000 kilometers on the clocks are no cause for concern, such a block has many more miles in it – provided the engine has been properly treated and maintained, of course. A service history is therefore welcome, even with lower mileage. Be sure to check when the camshaft chain has been replaced, which must be done every 150,000 km and is quite an expensive joke. Also take a closer look at the swingarm of the 1100, because it rusts from the inside. Also the exhausts dare to rust, and the alternator is a weaker point.
The Pan is not lightweight, but once you ride it feels relatively light. The more recent models do not shy away from sporty steering, and the block is surprisingly spicy. In short: a nice ride, although he dares to become a bit unstable at higher speed. In terms of purchase price, the Pan was quite substantial (around 18,000 euros for the latest models) and will also retain its price for those more recent models. An asking price around 11,000 euros for a 2016 model is no exception.
