Released Ikram Nazih, the Italian-Moroccan student imprisoned for a cartoon
Ikram Nazih, the Italian-Moroccan student imprisoned in Morocco in June for sharing a satirical cartoon on Facebook, was released. The announcement was made by the Farnesina through the words of the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Enzo Amendola, who had flown to Marrakech to follow the affair closely.
“Our compatriot is fine” said Amendola, heard by telephone from Daily fact. “I spoke to him a few minutes ago. He was happy and couldn’t wait to hug his family again, ”added the undersecretary.
“I am happy and relieved for what happened. Now I will take care of my family, in particular of my father who has been rather tried by the whole affair ”the girl told Amendola a few minutes after leaving the prison in Rabat, where she had been detained since last June 20.
Born in Vimercate and living in the province of Bergamo, 23-year-old Ikram Nazih was arrested on June 20, immediately after her arrival in Casablanca, where she went for a vacation.

The Italian-Moroccan student was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and to pay a fine for offenses against religion, due to a satirical cartoon shared on her Facebook profile in 2019.
On the afternoon of Monday 23 August, the news had spread of the advance of the first hearing of the appeal process, initially scheduled for 31 August, then, surprisingly, the decision of the Court of Appeal of Marrakech arrived, which annulled the trial and the sentence of the young woman canceled.
“In the appeal process, the reasons of the defense were heard and, thanks to the excellent institutional collaboration with the local authorities, Ikram will be released from prison. In recent weeks we have worked together with our ambassador in Rabat Armando Barucco, at the Consulate and in concert with Minister Di Maio and the Farnesina. In August I followed the case personally, speaking with interested parties and visiting Ikram Nazih at the place of detention, ”said Undersecretary Amendola.
“I want to thank the Italian Ambassador to Morocco Armando Barucco and the Undersecretary Enzo Amendola for the commitment they have dedicated to the cause. Together we followed the story from the first moment, having at heart only the well-being of our compatriot, in full respect of the work of the Moroccan institutions and justice “: this, however, the comment by the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio.
