It was 2018 when theHalo, the device designed to protect the driver’s head, made its appearance in a Formula 1 world championship. A solution that, at first, was received by many with distrust, thanks to a design that ruined the aesthetics of the single-seater and which seemed to be an obstacle also for the view of the drivers themselves. Several criticized that introduction, with the controversy that gradually dissolved, especially after the occurrence of some incidents of a certain gravity – above all that of Grosjean in Bahrain last year – such as to definitively overshadow the beauty of the cars due to the effective effectiveness of this tool.
The last contact between Verstappen and Hamilton at Monza he further highlighted the importance of the Halo, which is essential to avoid the possibility of an extremely serious or even fatal injury. An accident that managed to drastically convert the philosophy of those who, three years ago, could not bear the idea of having to live with this instrument, and who now fall into the category of “repent“.
Among these also the consultant of Red Bull Helmut Marko, who admitted to having totally changed his mind after having witnessed the accident between his driver and Hamilton, the latter coming out with only some neck pain from an episode that, in other years, would certainly have had worse consequences: “At first I was skeptical – Marko confirmed to the Austrian press – but I must admit that, as in the case of Grosjean, the Halo was decisive in ensuring that things went the right way ”.
On the other hand, the Verstappen-Hamilton case resulted in the victory of those who, right from the start, had defended the introduction of the safety system in F1. In the faction of the “pro” there was Mathias Lauda, son of the legendary Niki, who thus commented a Servus TV his thought: “The Halo did exactly what its function is – the Austrian analyzed – at first it did not seem like a sensational accident, but from the replays it was seen that, without the device, things could have ended much worse than that ”.

Regarding the reason for the accident, Lauda junior wanted to explain his version, attributing the blame for everything to the pit stop of the Red Bull: “It was a disaster – commented – seven / eight seconds is an eternity in F1, and if they want to fight for the title, these things don’t have to happen. In any case – he added – if they hadn’t made contact there, Lewis would have hit Max later. The penalty will be a handicap for Verstappen in the next race, especially when the fight for the world championship is so close. Every single aspect counts ”.
