Sudden rain and daring race at the Austrian Grand Prix, with Luca Marini who gives himself and his team a fabulous fifth place that no one would have been able to predict on the eve. In a flag-to-flag race, the Sky VR46 rookie Avintia achieved his best MotoGP finish by working very well with strategy and deciding to stay out as did the winner Brad Binder.
Started on dry ground from the 17th spot, the blue rookie climbed the rankings to 11th place when suddenly it started to rain violently in the first part of the circuit. On track on his Ducati for the remaining four laps on slick tires, he passed under the checkered flag in fifth place after just touching the podium on the final lap.
“I would say that we were about to make history, shame about the ending but I’m happy – commented an enthusiastic Marini – A weekend where we worked well from the first free practices, the first half of the race in the dry I was fast, I felt good. I was just struggling to get rid of the opponents because on the forehand I was losing something compared to them. Then with the rain I remained lucid, I started to calculate how much I would have lost with the bike change and in the end the decision to stay out was the right one. The last lap was really raining, I tried to defend myself from those who had rain and I just touched the podium. I’m a bit sorry, but I’m satisfied because I was able to stay calm and make the right choice at a key moment ”.
Very satisfied too Ruben Xaus, team principal of Avintia Esponsorama: “This is the beauty of MotoGP, how much it seems like everything is going wrong, all of a sudden they are all flowers. Luca in the dry was from Top12 today. It is there, very little to be with the top riders. With more experience, I expect him to be more consistently in the ten. In the last four laps he was perfect. A very difficult moment to manage, but he stayed there, followed Lecuona to save tires and lost the podium for two corners. The others from behind with the rain came really fast. A weekend closed in the best possible way, a great job by the whole team ”.
