It was this fight, however, that brought a smile back to Marquez’s face. The Spaniard, 15th at the finish, is in fact happy to be competitive again, regardless of the final result.

“In the situation we are in this year, I prefer to fight for a win in the dry than to also win a race in the wet or a flag-to-flag. So today I enjoyed the Grand Prix a lot, I felt really competitive, and we were right there, able to fight. Pecco was driving really well, but I was with him. Before the race it seemed like the rain could help me, but in the end it was the other way around!“, Marquez told Honda channels. “We have taken a big step forward this weekend, but there is still a lot of potential to exploit. We struggled here last weekend, figured out why and got better. I’m happy with today’s race, it’s just one point but I really enjoyed getting it. This is my best Sunday of the year“.

His Honda companion, Pol Espargaró, was in a decidedly different mood: “It was a disastrous race. I didn’t feel the bike, I didn’t have any grip. My driving style is not suited to the current situation and I’m definitely working on improving it. In free practice our pace is not bad, it’s top ten, but then when we go to the race I lose the grip and the pace I had after five or six laps. It is not enough and I am not satisfied, now we move to Silverstone and see what happens“.
