The ‘Turin Geofencing Lab’ project, born from the partnership between FCA Italy, City of Turin and 5T Srl, was confirmed after the birth of the Stellantis group and has now entered its final phase, according to what was communicated by the car company.
The program – which had started in June 2020 with the agreement signed between the Department of Transport, Infrastructure and Mobility of the City of Turin and the aforementioned companies – aimed at promoting the integration of electrified mobility with city infrastructure for the management of restricted traffic areas (ZTL). This happens thanks to the use of two Jeep Renegade 4xe, therefore a plug-in hybrid, equipped with sensors capable of recognizing in advance the entry into the restricted traffic area and consequently turning off the heat engine. The transition to electric is thus controlled automatically, so as to make the LTZ much cleaner from the point of view of emissions.

In this sense, the support of the Stellantis e-Mobility Business Unit is fundamental and the Fiat Research Center, which equipped the cars. In December 2020, the Municipality of Turin began the experimentation independently, verifying the communications between the cars and the 5T Mobility Center. After more than 6 months of tests, the data collected seem to have given extremely positive results. The two Jeeps crossed the ZTLs using electric mode for 70% of the time.

Furthermore, with the geofencing system, every motorist who exploits its potential can enter the ZTL without violations, as there is complete traceability of vehicles.. Experimentation can now have interesting outlets for other cities that want to continue with their studies or set up a car park capable of polluting less.
Recall that the geo-fence is a sort of virtual perimeter associated with a geographical area of the real world. Geofencing derives from this, used by devices capable of determining their position and transforming themselves into terminals for the use of a service; upon entering and exiting the area, the device can perform predetermined actions: in the case of a car, in fact, deactivate the internal combustion engine and activate the electric mode.
